Back Pain: Vertebrae are the bones that make up your spine. There are 24 freely moveable vertebrae in your neck, mid and lower back. Vertebrae can become misaligned by many things including: a slip or fall, poor posture, improper lifting, or even sneezing. Your vertebrae move with the help of muscles. You have 640 muscles in your body. Each one has a specific job to do. By definition muscles generate force and produce movement. Muscles can become spasmed or tighten up as a result of the same items I just mentioned that can cause your vertebrae to misalign. Underneath the muscles and vertebrae is your nervous system. There are over one billion nerves in your body. Stretched end to end they would exceed 45 miles. Subluxations not only cause pain and stiffness in your neck and back but they also cause malfunction or loss of health throughout your body. I once had a patient who became misaligned by a simple sneeze. She woke up the next morning with minor stiffness and lower back pain. She decided to take some medication and move on with her day. She continued for a week without seeking treatment for her back pain and as a result ended up bed ridden for eight months. Her misalignment turned into three herniated discs causing loss of range of motion and sciatic nerve pain. She literally could not walk or dress herself. Shoulder and Neck Pain: If you have ever experienced frequent headaches you know what a nuance they can be. And if you have ever had the misfortune of being laid out from a debilitating migraine you understand the importance of seeking treatment right away. Although there could be other causes, there might be a cause worth talking about, and it is something that has actually been known by Chiropractors for over 100 years. When you experience a trauma of any kind, slipping on ice, falling off a horse, or being involved in an auto accident, oftentimes the top vertebra in our spine, atlas or C1, can be jarred from its normal position. This vertebra is the only one in the entire spine not connected by discs to the vertebra below. It is held in place only by ligaments and tendons. In the case of an injury, these ligaments and tendons can be stretched to make way for the C1's new position. Add this to the fact that the Atlas is the only vertebra that can actually induce increased pressure or tension on the spinal cord by its ability to move so freely and you have bigger issues. Sitting just above the Atlas is the brain stem, which is essentially the precursor to the spinal cord. The brain stem is the part of your nervous system that controls and regulates all of your necessary and vital organ functions; things like breathing, heart beat, blood pressure, coordination, balance, immune system. When the Atlas has encroached upon the neural canal that the spinal cord descends through, this added stress and tension affects the brain stem, essentially disrupting or blocking communication to the rest of the body. This is what we call a vertebral subluxation. This vertebral subluxation can lead to various problems throughout the body, not the least of which are migraine headaches.
